What I’m Reading: The Picture Book Expert

This week, we turned to Mika, aged 2, to get the low-down on his all-time favourite picture books (as dictated to his mum, Mandi from Mary Glasgow Magazines).

A Wild Goose Chase , by Martin Kelly, has been a firm favourite for Mika since he was really little. He likes making the sound of the bees, as they come out of the ‘honey tree’, loves the disguise that the goose gets into and when the goose looks in the mirror and exclaims, ‘Success’ – Mika always shouts out that word. He loves the sound of it and can always predict when it will come in the text. This has been his favourite book for about a year now. Sometimes asking for it to be read two or three times in a row, and always happy to see it again if he hasn’t had it read to him in a while. A really good story book that has saved many a long car journey!

Fox in Socks , by Dr Seuss, captivated Mika’s attention from the first time he heard it. The rhyming text meant it was easy for him to memorise and of course he finds the silliness of the words a laugh out loud read.

Thomas & Friends is undoubtedly a firm favourite, especially because of the animated series. The text is really simple and direct, but he loves it because he is so familiar with the characters.

Mika’s final pick is George’s First Day at Playgroup , the book he chose at the library last week. Mika loves any book in the Peppa Pig series. Peppa and her brother George amuse Mika no end.

Definitely a little reader, he loves reading the same book at least twice (or more!) in a row. A request for repetition is definitely an indicator that he loves a particular book.
