Roald Dahl Writing Competition

Competition entrants must be 16 years old or under. Open to UK residents only.

The closing date: 12th October 2008

Stories and poems can be any length and each entry may be by any number of authors. Only one entry will be allowed per person. The winning entry in each age group will be published on this website at the end of October. The age categories are: 4–7 years, 8–11 years and 12–16 years. The judges’ decision is final and no negotiation will be entered into.

  • Whether you would like your full name to be published on our website if your story or poem should win the competition.

Each entry may also include one small piece of artwork to accompany the story: artwork should be submitted electronically as a JPEG file under 1.5MB in size.

Terms and conditions for all Scholastic competitions

7.1 Any person who is an employee or an immediate family member of an employee of Scholastic or any other person who is directly connected with the organisation of any particular competition is ineligible to participate.

7.2 By entering the competition entrants will be deemed to be bound by the rules of that competition and to have read and understood the provisions of this clause 7 and be bound by them.

7.3 Competitions are only open to residents of the UK, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

7.4 Entrants under the age of 16 must have permission from their parent or guardian.

7.5 All decisions of Scholastic will be final and binding and no correspondence will be entered into.

7.6 All entries or answers must be received by Scholastic by the closing date specified in the competition. Answers will be entered automatically upon submission. Scholastic shall take no responsibility for any answers that are illegible, misdirected, lost for technical or other reasons or received after the closing date.

7.7 If for any reason an advertised prize is unavailable, Scholastic reserves the right in its absolute discretion to substitute a similar prize of equivalent or greater value. None of the prizes may be exchanged or transferred and no cash alternative will be offered. Only one prize will be awarded per household. Please allow 28 days for delivery of all prizes.

7.8 The winner(s) name(s) will be selected in a random draw from all correct answers received. Winner(s) of prizes will be announced on Scholastic’s website and/or notified within seven days after the winner(s) have been ascertained. Names of winners are available from Scholastic upon request.

7.9 If the winner(s) of a prize cannot be traced after reasonable efforts having been made by Scholastic, then Scholastic may dispose of the prize as it thinks fit without any liability to the winner(s) for having done so.

7.10 Entry costs (where applicable) are as advertised. Entrants are liable for their costs to access telephone, mobile or computer networks.

7.11 Where prizes are to be provided by a third party then the winner(s) will be required to complete all appropriate or applicable booking or other formalities direct with such provider. Scholastic will have no responsibility for the acts or defaults of any other persons.

7.12 Scholastic reserves the absolute right to disqualify any entrant to any competition which it considers has used improper technical means to enter.

7.13 Prizes Involving Travel: (a) Scholastic reserves the right to require written permission from the parent or guardian of any winner(s) who is under the age of 16 and to require such winner(s) to choose as a companion someone 18 or over. (b) All travel, holiday, health or insurance shall be the responsibility of the prize winner(s) and not Scholastic. (c) Holidays include accommodation & travel as described. Travel connections, additional charges, exit taxes, etc. are the responsibility of prize winners and should be paid from the spending money given as part of prizes (d) Travel dates may be restricted to certain times of the year; (d) Unless otherwise stated, all travel and holiday prizes must be taken within one year of the date of the competition draw.
