Scholastic UK Ltd’s Environmental Policy

We aim to improve our environmental performance in the following areas:

Reducing our carbon footprint

carbon-footprint-small.jpg Our aim is to reduce our carbon footprint as far as we can so we’ve asked the Carbon Trust to conduct site surveys and make recommendations for how we can improve what we do.

During 2009 we intend to measure our Carbon Footprint and put in place an action plan to reduce our footprint year on year.

Our plans for measuring our carbon footprint. are outlined here

Community involvement

We will publish books, web sites and teacher resources with environmental themes that will inspire school children and their communities to adopt and implement environmentally friendly activities.

Educate employees

We will educate and train our employees in environmental issues and the environmental effects of their activities.

Monitor environmental performance:

We will monitor and review our environmental performance on a regular basis (usually annually).

Product creation and marketing materials

We will use suppliers where wood is sourced from legal and sustainably managed forests. We expect similar environmental standards from all suppliers and contractors. We will rigorously test all our products to ensure compliance with all EU legislations regarding materials.

We will utilise Internet and digital technologies to reduce usage of paper and packaging material and to reduce mailing activity.

Transport

We will assist and encourage staff to use public transport and ‘greener’ modes of transport wherever possible and we will reduce transportation of our products wherever feasible.

By working with our larger customers to deliver our product directly from the printer to their own warehouse we will reduce ‘book miles’.

RecycleRecycling

We will recycle items that can be efficiently and cost-effectively recycled or re-used. We will conform to WEEE directives for the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment.

Reduce packaging materials and minimise waste

We will minimise packaging and comply with packaging waste directives. We will minimise the amount of waste that is sent to landfill by reducing usage, using more products that can be recycled and finding new ways to recycle waste.

Building improvements

Each year, we will set aside funding for building improvements or heating/cooling efficiencies that will further reduce the carbon footprint of our buildings.

Greener IT

Each year, we will set a side funding for technology improvements that will reduce the carbon footprint of our IT infrastructure.

Energy usage

We will encourage efficient use of water and energy (gas, oil and electricity) and reduce our consumption with efficiency initiatives and staff education.
