Training and development
Scholastic offers a one day Induction Course for all new starters.
Scholastic is committed to training and developing staff for their present and future tasks. Courses are run in-house – including a variety of NVQ qualifications – and staff can attend external and internal courses with agreement from their Line Manager.
Promotion opportunities
Vacancies are normally advertised internally, giving staff opportunities for promotion.
Holidays
Our holiday entitlement is 25 working days each year rising to 30 days with long service:
- 27 days after 5 years of service
- 28 days after 6 years of service
- 29 days after 7 years of service
- 30 days after 8 years of service
Maternity/paternity
Our maternity scheme provides benefits far in excess of the statutory scheme and a large proportion of mothers return to work.
The length of Statutory Maternity Leave is currently 39 weeks. For the first 6 weeks it is paid at 90% of annual salary. For the remaining 33 weeks, the rate is £117.18 per week.
Fathers are given generous paternity leave. Length of Paternity Leave is two weeks. Statutory Paternity Pay is paid the same as the current rate of Statutory Maternity Pay.
For those employees who qualify Scholastic provides a generous Occupational Maternity and Paternity Pay subject to length of service.
Scholastic employees are also entitled to benefit from a 10% discount when ordering products from Babyblooms, a supplier of maternity gifts for new mothers and babies.
Pension
Scholastic offers all staff the opportunity to join a Group Personal Pension Plan, to which the Company contributes following successful completion of your probationary period. Further information will be sent to you from HR.
BUPA Cash Plan
Scholastic offers membership to BUPA Cash Plan, which you will be invited to join following the successful completion of your probationary period.
Life assurance
Scholastic employees have life assurance cover of one year’s annual salary.
Childcare vouchers
Scholastic offers employees the possibility of using Busy Bees vouchers to pay for their Childcare. Busy Bees vouchers are non-taxable and exempt from National Insurance contributions.
Book purchases
Staff are entitled to 50% discount on books and 30% on CD-ROMS and DVDs from the Scholastic Book Club and Education ans Scholastic Children’s Books catalogues.
Scholastic also offers a 20% staff discount on books purchased from the Book People catalogue, Red House and School Link catalogues.
Computer purchase scheme
Scholastic offers the opportunity for all permanent Scholastic employees to purchase a Dell PC/laptop computer or a Macintosh computer at reduced rates.
Long service
Scholastic recognises long service on significant anniversary dates – 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years’ service. At each long service award the company provides a gift and a long service dinner.
Retirement
Scholastic provides £250 on retirement, which can be used for a meal with colleagues and/or a gift.
Charity giving
Scholastic promotes charity giving through our Charity Donation scheme. Those employees who wish to make a regular monthly donation can choose one of the following charities:

- Macmillan
Pay review
Salaries are reviewed annually.
Eye vouchers
Scholastic will pay for you to have an annual eye test at Specsavers. Eye vouchers entitle you to a free eye test and money off your glasses.
Sabbaticals
All employees can apply for a two month sabbatical after five years service.
