What made you become an author?
When I was a boy I loved reading and writing horrible
stories. I decided that I just had to be writer when
I grew up. |

Did you enjoy Science at school?
With the exception of biology I never found Science
very exciting. It just wasn't horrible enough for me
and it was only when started writing Horrible Science
books that I realised how gruesome the subject can be! |

Who is your favourite author/writer?
My favourite author is the writer of whatever book
I am reading at the time. My favourite author changes
every few days so it's unfair to single anyone out.
If you've got a favourite author, my advice is read
every book you can by that person but then read another
author because that's the best way to enjoy books. |

What books do you
enjoy reading?
I like to read a mixture of stories and non-fiction.
For me a good book has to be more than exciting and
readable. I want to learn things that I didn't know
before ' about people, science or whatever the book's
about. |

How long does it take you to
write a typical Horrible Science book?
I can write a book in less than two weeks ' but researching
the book, and afterwards improving it and commenting
on Tony de Saulles' marvellous illustrations' well,
that can take months. |

Which is your favourite Horrible
Science book you have written?
Every Horrible Science book is written to the best
of my ability. Once it's published I'm like a proud
mum and it's unfair to have a favourite. Having said
that the illustrations in Nasty Nature make
me giggle every time and I love The Stunning Science
of Everything! |
