What I’m Reading: Northern Lights

What I'm Reading - Northern Lights

Today we take a look inside Meera’s (very full) bag to see what book she’s got on the go. As part of the digital marketing team, Meera spends her days sharing her love of reading and gushing about all the best books with all of you out there!

As long as I could read, I’ve approached every journey as precious time to get stuck into a good book and transported to a whole new world.

Whether by car, bus plane or train, from my 20 minute commute to work to the 20+ hours flying back home to Australia – you’ll find me with my nose buried in a book.

When it comes to my daily trips on the tube, as soon as I’m comfortably seated— who am I kidding?! As soon as I’m awkwardly squished between two people, a back pack and a pole, I whip out my book and escape the hot, crowded carriage into some other marvellous world. There’s something still so incredible to me that I can turn this daily trudging journey into the most magical experience.

Currently, I’m revisiting the unbelievably rich world of Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights , the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy. I’ve read it countless times, and I’ve taken advantage of the gorgeous new 20th anniversary editions to read it again, and I’m struck by how new and exciting the stories still seem.

I’m getting so much joy in recalling my first impressions of brave Lyra and her daemon, Pantalaimon, the fierce and loyal ice-bear, Iorek Byrnison, and the chilling Mrs Coulter, and I’m amazed at how many new things I’m discovering. It’s testament to Pullman’s writing that a story that spoke to me so much as a child is still so captivating for me as an adult. It’s got my imagination sparking again, just as it did when I read it for the very first time.

I’ve got a trip coming up soon and books 2 and 3 are already packed in my suitcase!
