When you learn to code, you learn to think like a computer. This teaches you to break down difficult problems into smaller steps that you can actually do. Learning to solve problems like this will help you in a million other ways in your life.

2. If you can code, you’ll always get a job

It might not seem important at the moment, but knowing how to code will be a really valuable skill when you’re older. Coding is one of the most in-demand skills, which means that coders can be picky about which jobs they choose.

3. You can save time by automating boring stuff

As a coder, you can automate a lot of the boring stuff you have to do on your computer. If Bart Simpson knew how to code, he’d never have to spend ages writing lines on a blackboard, he could write code to do it much faster for him!

4. Coding is empowering!

Being a coder lets you be very independent. Once you understand the basics, almost all of the tools you need to make something are free, and all of the information you need can be found in books or on the Web. Coding is also very empowering, because you can make your computer or phone do what you want to make your ideas come true. It’s like being a painter and having a palette with every colour in the world.

5. You can make your own awesome games

Once you can code, you can make your own cool apps, games and websites. As a coder you get to look inside things and really understand how they work, like taking the back off a watch and looking inside. For example, here’s the code for a version of Angry Birds made in Scratch. Understanding how these things work will help you create your own projects.
