Summer Reading: Out and About

Summer Reading - Out and About

It’s not a surprise that sitting inside reading may not be the most appealing idea for kids during the summer holidays. The good news is that there’s also plenty of reading – incidental and otherwise – to do outdoors. Not only does this add some variety and fun into reading during the holidays, it also shows children the everyday importance of being able to read.

So get outside and get your reading hats on!

Go for a walk. Get your children to read the directions for the journey, and the signs while you’re out and about. These are also great activities for when you’re on a car trip.

Visit the zoo or a national park. Get your children to read signs and brochures on the way. Perfect for learning and for a family day out! This summer, Julia Donaldson fans can wiggle along to a Superworm trail near them. There’s lots of activities to complete along the way too! Click here for all the details.

Hunt for treasure. Put a treasure hunt together for the kids – or they could help put one together for their friends! Get your child to read the clues and directions for everyone to follow.

Take books with you. On picnics, on day trips…it’s always a great idea to spend a little time reading. Outdoor activity books, like this gardening kit are perfect for getting outside and active while still reading.

Visit your local library. It’s great to surround kids with books, and give them the chance to choose what they want to read. Plus, have a look at what activities your local library has on over the summer.

Come back next week for ideas on rainy day activities.
