Summer Reading: Rainy Day Activities

Summer Reading - Rainy Day Activities

It’s summer, and you’re going to be met with the inevitable rainy day. But don’t worry! There are plenty of fun indoor activities to do that make reading fun. Here are some ideas to get you started – they’re great for getting reluctant readers reading, or for one of those days when your child just doesn’t want to pick up a book.

Stock up on activity books. Whether your child loves sticker books, make-and-do books, or colouring books, activity and craft books are great to have on hand to keep kids entertained and get their brains sparking. Have a look if there are activity books for your child’s favourite characters or series – this is also an excellent way to encourage them to read.

Bake a cake together. Help your child read the ingredients list, weigh out what’s needed and read through the steps while you bake together. Not only have they practised reading, you get a tasty treat at the end!

Play board games. The ultimate rainy day activity, play a board game together and let your child read out the instructions and game information to everyone.

Competitions and quizzes. Like activity books, these are a great way to keep kids entertained and reading, especially when they’ve had enough of their book.

Get drawing. Get your child to draw the characters and scenes, or even their own book cover. This is a great way to get your kids to engage with the books they’re reading. Colouring books are also perfect for lazy holiday afternoons.
