National Storytelling Week: Free resources for reading aloud

National Storytelling Week is only two weeks away, which has us thinking about the power of storytelling to nurture a child’s lifelong love of reading.

Here are some great, free resources for reading aloud to help you get the most out of storytime in the classroom. There’ll be even more free resources on the blog later this week.

Word of Mouth: Activities . Explore storytelling and reading aloud with these dip-in activities.

Talking the Text: Article and activities . Poet, author and freelance educational consultant, Pie Corbett, shares advice to encourage your class to tell stories and recount events aloud, helping improve their writing skills.

Sounds like a Story: Activity sheet . Encourage your students to write down, then read aloud, four story sentences and choose sound effects for them, adding a picture of each instrument/effect in the small boxes provided.

How to Read a Poem Aloud: Activity Sheet . Handy hints and tips for children to refer to when reading poems aloud.
