Find out what schools made of the Lollies 2016!

You must have heard by now: last month we held the Laugh Out Loud Book Awards 2016! The awards were not only enjoyed by authors and publishers, but by children from the schools who voted for their favourites to join us.

Here’s what two special guest schools, Holmleigh Primary and Marner Primary, thought of the awards ceremony and reading funny books.

First things first, what made you want to get involved in the Lollies?

I wanted to get involved because my class love humorous books, especially the boys who are not as keen to read as the girls in my class. Boys also like to vote and put books in order and so the competitive element of the competition, and the children having their say was very motivational for the class.

What did the children think of the awards ceremony?

The children were very excited to attend and see the authors and Michael Rosen! They really appreciated the ice creams and the goodie bags. And seeing Sam and Mark presenting! ... I think their absolute favourite part was the Horrible Histories sketch.

The children were very excited about attending the event. Not only because it was hosted by Sam and Mark and Michael Rosen (one of my boys was in complete disbelief when he appeared on stage), but because the authors and illustrators were there. The awards were exactly like an awards show off the TV and the children found this very exciting.

Why should funny children’s books be celebrated?

I think learning needs to be enjoyable and humour is definitely needed in life.

-Teacher at Marner Primary School

I like books where an author includes humour in a story which then allows them to tackle serious, challenging subjects…Because the book is funny, the children want to read it.
