Happy Roald Dahl Day! Discover our favourite stories by the acclaimed author
To celebrate Roald Dahl Day, we asked some of our colleagues at Scholastic to tell us their favourite of the much-loved author’s classic tales. Happy reading!
Matilda
Matilda had such an impact on me as a child to the extent I still love the story today. As a young girl who loved to read, I saw myself in Matilda and her story always bought me such hope. She is a heroine that teaches children that you are never alone and that you should never listen to the people in life that attempt to bring you down. Matilda will always hold a special place in my heart.
– AbbyThe Witches
My favourite Roald Dahl book has got to be The Witches. I remember being a child and reading it for the first time, terrified and yet unable to tear my eyes away from the page… Reading this book was definitely where my love of horror and all things scary began! To this day, the vivid descriptions of the witches and their evil doings send a shiver down my spine.
– HollyThe BFG
My favourite Roald Dahl book is The BFG, an exciting (if a bit strange) story about an 8-year-old girl called Sophie who befriends a benevolent giant and goes on an adventure to Giant Country, where they attempt to stop the man-eating giants. I love the way it creates whole new worlds that might exist, encourages imagination, and the idea of catching dreams is also pretty cool!
– EleanorFantastic Mr Fox
It’s so hard to pick a favourite Roald Dahl book but if I had to, it would probably be Fantastic Mr Fox. Filled with witty dialogue and a lot of silly moments, this is such an entertaining book that will keep you hooked from the very first page. The ways in which Mr Fox outsmarts the three farmers are hilarious and the determination to protect his family and community throughout is heart-warming. This is also a very short book, so it’s perfect for getting kids into reading!
– AliceCharlie and the Chocolate Factory
When I think of Roald Dahl, I always think of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! It’s a crazy and funny story, with the wacky Willy Wonka and his wonderful and imaginative chocolate creations. Charlie and his grandpa are such loveable characters that you can’t help but root for them, and the ending always brings a smile to my face. I love a happy ending!
