National Poetry Day 2019

Every year National Poetry Day brings people together to enjoy, discover and share words that matter. This year is its 25th anniversary, so the celebrations will be even bigger, and theme is TRUTH, a subject guaranteed to prompt lively discussion and the writing of poetry.

National Poetry Day Ambassador Michael Rosen says: “Poetry is a way of looking at the world and yourself where the truth is to do with how a person feels rather than something that has to be proved. The truth in most poetry lies in the language of trying to say something that matters in a way that feels true to you. Children don’t have many chances to talk about what matters to them, how they feel about things, or what they feel is true. Poetry gives them an opportunity to do these things.”

Joining in can be as simple as creating poetry displays, or sharing favourite poems on the day. However, we hope that this year schools everywhere will take part in our 25th anniversary poetry challenge, MyNPDPoem by writing poems on the theme of Truth then performing and sharing them on National Poetry Day. You’ll find ideas, resources and inspiration on the National Poetry Day website, including films packed with writing tips and suggestions and starring poets Michael Rosen, Rachel Rooney, Joseph Coelho, Victoria Adukwei Bulley and Karl Nova.

There’s a special certificate for every child who writes a poem and why not collect them together into your very own printed poetry anthology with We Are Writers? It’s a brilliant way to inspire children and celebrate their writing in a book they can treasure for years to come.

Be sure to let us know what you are doing by adding details to the National Poetry Day events map nationalpoetryday.co.uk/join-in (it will also let you know what else is happening in your area) and on social media using #NationalPoetryDay.

Wishing everyone a happy National Poetry Day!
