Scholastic Book Clubs supplies titles for the UK’s highest-profile children’s book awards

CILIP are delighted to announce that Scholastic Book Clubs Ltd will become the official book supplier for the CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Medals Shadowing Scheme from 2011
After a comprehensive tender process, Scholastic Book Clubs will manage the book supply for over 3,800 shadowing groups in schools and public libraries. Over 90,000 children across the UK and overseas ‘shadow’ the awards each year. This increasingly popular national reading event encourages young people to shadow the judging process for the UK’s oldest and most revered awards for children’s fiction and illustrated books.
On the 1st April 2011, when shortlists are announced, shadowing groups in schools and libraries will log onto www.ckg.org.uk/shadowing to check which authors, illustrators and books have made it.
Scholastic Book Clubs will supply shadowing groups with shortlisted titles at 20% discount from RRP, and will give back to schools and libraries a further 20% of the value of their order in “commission” to spend on books.
Julie Randles, Managing Director of Scholastic Book Clubs, said “I’m delighted that Scholastic Book Clubs will be partnering with CILIP to provide books for the shadowing scheme, which is an excellent way to engage young readers. In these times of cutbacks, we hope that our 20% commission offering will help schools and libraries in making their bookbuying budgets go further”.
Annie Mauger, Chief Executive of CILIP, welcomed the announcement, “This is a fantastic new partnership for CILIP. We know budgets are tight for many public and school libraries across the country. We also know that many youth librarians make purchasing the shortlisted titles a priority in stock selection each year. By working with Scholastic Book Clubs we can offer shadowing group leaders an excellent deal and continue to expand the shadowing scheme through Scholastic Book Clubs’ networks.”
“Ensuring books can be supplied to shadowing groups as soon as possible from the shortlist announcement is crucial to the success of the scheme,” says Kasey Butler, CILIP Corporate Marketing Manager, “We selected Scholastic Book Clubs because of the significant discounts and resources they can provide shadowing group readers with to help enhance the overall shadowing experience.”

2. About The CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Children’s Book Awards and the Shadowing Scheme
The CILIP Carnegie Medal is awarded annually for a work of outstanding fiction for young people. Its sister award, the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding work of illustration for young people. The medals are judged by a panel of children’s librarians from CILIP’s Youth Libraries Group (YLG) who select the shortlists and winning titles, frequently spotting fresh talent ahead of the rest. Members of the panel combine an in-depth knowledge of books with daily experience of working and reading with young people.
The shadowing scheme began formally in 1994 and was soon recognised as an exciting way to engage young people nationally with books, broadening their reading for fun outside the prescriptive norms of the curriculum. Shadowing introduces children to top quality fiction and illustration, to new writers, illustrators and genres, and encourages breadth and depth of reading. The shortlisted books fire their imagination and help develop literacy and critical skills.
Visit www.ckg.org.uk for more information about the award or www.ckg.org.uk/shadowing to register a new shadowing group for free.
