Turn Pages, See Worlds: The Magic of Graphic Novels

Chances are, you’ve read a graphic novel or two but, just in case you haven’t, now’s the time to join the comics revolution! Graphic novels and manga are sometimes disregarded as ‘easy’ books that aren’t worth your time, you may even have been told to “put down that comic and read a real book”, well, I’d like to challenge that idea…

Manga and graphic novels blend words and images to help spark your imagination. Comic art has the ability to pull you into fast-paced battle scenes or sprawling cityscapes in a matter of seconds. These books are their own art forms and use completely different storytelling techniques to other types of media.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking manga and graphic novels lack depth, they can tell stories just as detailed and emotional as any novel. These books should be respected and have a long history. Have you read the fantastical Unico? Did you know that the author was writing manga way back in the 1940s? Some manga are even older than that!

There’s something here for everyone, across every genre. Do you like comedy? Try the bite-sized comics of Saphie the One-Eyed Cat or the joke-filled bonanza of Bunny vs Monkey. Seeking adventure? Try the robotic brawls of Mecha-Ude or the epic quests of City of Dragons. Interested in pop stars? The heartwarming Hikaru in the Light! could be for you. Horror-head? Spook your socks off with Five Nights at Freddy’s.

If you love novels and you’ve already read the Wings of Fire series or -When the Sky Falls_, take their graphic counterparts out for a spin. Adaptations can give a fresh take on stories you already love. Haven’t read the originals? Use the graphic novels to take the tales for a test-drive.

If you’re still not convinced comics are for you, try out something starring characters you already know, like Pokémon or Spider-Man, to get you started.
