The Power of Graphic Novels

The Power of Graphic Novels by Jon Biddle

Although the number of children choosing to read for pleasure is in serious decline, there’s clear evidence to show that the opposite is true with graphic novels and comics. A National Literacy Trust study from 2023 reported that 59% of children who read graphic novels in their free time stated that they enjoyed reading for pleasure, compared to 33% of children who didn’t read them. More children who read graphic novels said they read something daily in their free time than their peers who didn’t (36% vs 23%).

Even though there’s still some reluctance from the ‘they’re not real reading’ brigade, graphic novels can – and should – be an essential part of a classroom reading culture. They can be read quickly, which means that half the class can devour one within a couple of weeks, making them perfect for spontaneous book chat and building reciprocal reading communities. Because children are the experts (although I read a lot of graphic novels, it’s impossible to keep up!), they also create a genuine child-led reading community. And, most importantly, they’re a lot of fun to read, either alone or with a friend.

“I love reading graphic novels. I can really get into the story because the pictures help me follow what’s going on..” Lilly

Graphic novels bring a huge range of benefits. The combination of visual and textual storytelling can help readers decode complex narratives. They can also serve as a bridge for vulnerable or less engaged readers, helping the transition to other texts. Graphic novels often feature diverse characters and stories that reflect different cultures, addressing complex themes such as identity and mental health, with the visual element allows for a deeper emotional connection to the story. They’re ideal for enhancing the wider curriculum, developing critical thinking and encouraging creativity, providing children with the motivation to create their own.

My class currently have two graphic novel series in production. The first is Pork and Burple (Pig and Turtle), featuring an over-enthusiastic pig and a wise turtle who rides around on his back, dispensing advice at every opportunity. The second is Big Dave Goes To , where Big Dave visits various places around the world; they’re generally fast-food outlets, although he did once go to the Bernabéu football stadium in Madrid and ended up scoring the winning goal (for Norwich City – not quite sure how but it made sense when I read it). It’s lovely to watch them collaborate on a project, sharing ideas and supporting each other.

I could go on, but the bottom line is that every classroom needs more graphic novels! The message is definitely getting through to schools, libraries and bookshops, with the popularity of graphic novels continuing to rise. Scholastic have realised this and, as a result, have introduced their Termly Graphic Novel Book Box for primary schools. As well as a fantastic range of books – including current Moorlands favourites InvestiGATORS , Bunny vs Monkey and Nina Peanut – the boxes also include a wide selection of bookmarks, posters, stickers and activity sheets. Our Year Six Reading Champions created a display of the books in the school library and every single one had been borrowed by the end of the second day. They’re also available at a significant discount which, considering the difficult financial position that many schools are facing, is hugely important.

With 2026 being a National Year of Reading, it’s essential that we guide children towards books that they’re genuinely going to enjoy and, in my opinion, that definitely includes graphic novels.

“I read all kinds of books but graphic novels are probably my favourite. Actually, they’re definitely my favourite.” Hadley
